Day 3: Wink, Laugh, Love

“There is a time to wink as well as see ...”

I remember this idiom for some reason and thought it would be appropriate in remembering that even though I definitely want to be accountable on the journey. I definitely don’t want to take myself too seriously! But then I looked up what they say the saying means and discovered it had nothing to do with taking yourself too seriously! And then it dawned on me ... Who are “they” to tell me the meaning of some ridiculously vague expression? So in the name of self-expression. I am sticking to my quote for the day.

But instead of focusing on what the saying means here at the beginning of this journey I am defying “them” and challenging myself and anyone else who wants to come along to figure out their own meanings to the ideas that resonate in your soul. To hell with those pain in the butt teachers (or anyone else) who would tell us what we are supposed to get from a quote or a song lyric ... a Bible verse ... or anything else. If the journey is about anything, it is about your right to figure it out!

The institutionalization of the journey is not working. Look at our major institutions. In many ways they have lost touch with the individuals they were built serve. You cannot institutionalize your mind or your heart or your soul. So for today - the idea is to be bold in finding your own meaning to whatever quote or idea moves you. Figure it out! Just don’t sit there letting others tell you the meaning of the quote. If you do, eventually, “they” will be telling you and me the meaning of our lives.

As Murray Burns said yesterday, “You’ve got to own your days, each and every one.”

It makes sense to me that in order to do that we have to take time ... time to see. “There is a time to see” (for yourself) and “a time to wink.” A reminder in this day of angry words and tribal mentalities - sometimes we need to just relax. Don’t take ourselves too seriously. Wink, laugh, love. I need that reminder on this third day of the journey. Seeing takes intention. Winking takes perspective.

By the way, if it means something else to you ... Great - Figure it out and let me know what it is!
